Course Overview:
Typography is at the core of design—whether implicit, invisible or hidden, or explicit in its role in shaping language, culture, and power structures, it creates lasting impact. This course will take a deep dive into the macro- and micro- of typography. While macrotypography is concerned with the format of the final medium (whether printed or virtual), the size and position of the columns of type and illustrations, the organization of the hierarchy, and the aesthetics; detail or microtypography is concerned with the individual components—letters, letter spacing, words, word spacing, lines, line spacing, punctuation, and columns of text. Throughout the quarter we will hone your typesetting skills, examine typography as a container for language and culture, and explore typographic expression, content, and meaning.

GD105 Intro to Visual Design

DePaul University
College of Computing & Digital Media
School of Design
2020-21, Design Principles

Course Overview:
Design is the act of synthesizing content and form, structuring systems, and communicating content visually.  This course will provide an introduction to the principles of visual design—including composition, form, counterform, point, line, plane, color, basic image-making (vector and photography) and elements of visual narrative and storytelling. Our worlds are visually coded; whether consciously or subconsciously, we are constantly reading, absorbing, breaking down, and communicating through visual form. Throughout the quarter, we will be developing our skills in not only how we understand visual form, but how we can use visual form to communicate content and meaning.  In addition, this course will introduce processes and methods—sketching, iteration, storyboarding, visual research and planning, color systems, and both analogue and digital tools—that serve as a designer’s toolkit.
